Job Description

At Toyota Research Institute (TRI), we’re on a mission to improve the quality of human life. We’re developing new tools and capabilities to amplify the human experience. To lead this transformative shift in mobility, we’ve built world-class teams spanning human-centric AI, energy and materials, performance driving, and robotics.
TRI’s Harmonious Communities Department within our Human-Centered AI (HCAI) Division has an immediate opening for candidates interested in our core topic domain of social well-being and connection. Our mandate is to use research to foster Toyota’s global mission of happiness for all, and this challenge motivates everything we do. We are a coordinated team of behavioral scientists, ML researchers, and human-computer interaction experts. The person who accepts this opportunity must have a strong interest in collaborating across all of these domains. Additionally, this role will work with teams across Toyota to design and pilot technologies that help us to better understand and experience the world from the perspectives of others. Candidates should be self-starting and interested in making contributions within a multidisciplinary team project.Responsibilities
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with specialists in multiple fields, as well as university partners, to research and develop ways to foster empathy, connection, curiosity and joy
  • Use theory and concepts from behavioral and social science to reframe business challenges, propose new interventions, design and analyze experiments, and analyze observational data. Our work often includes in-person, on-the-ground research, so you should be interested in supporting and/or engaging in this kind of work as well as your own domain expertise.
  • Partner with engineers and other HCAI researchers to integrate research findings and designs into software
  • Share research findings in peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and/or patents
  • In collaboration with TRI and TMC partners, build a research career path that continues our efforts to enable and empower happiness for all and well-being in our communities
Qualifications
  • We are interested in candidates with any of the following backgrounds:
  • PhD in any Behavioral or Social Science (Computational Social Sciences, Social Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology)
  • PhD in Computer Sciences/ML, with training and experience in relevant behavioral sciences theories and experience in behavioral datasets
  • PhD in Computer Sciences/HCI, with training and experience in behavioral sciences theory (e.g., Affective Computing)
  • Strong interest in applying behavioral and social science concepts and principles in partnership with product teams. Experience is a bonus. If you don’t yet have experience in this, please consider how your past research might be applied to serve others’ needs.
  • Advanced knowledge of data analysis methods common to the field of behavioral science. This could include: Bayesian analysis, quantitative data analysis (generalized linear models, frequentist and Bayesian statistics, non-parametric methods), psychometrics, social network mapping, text analysis, Natural Language Processing, and/or Semiotic Analysis, among other approaches.
  • Proficiency in R and/or Python
  • Data visualization techniques would be a plus
  • Appetite to learn across functions
  • Great teammate - collaborative, curious, supportive, engaged. Our metrics for success are collective - when we win, it is because everyone contributes to the outcome.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a team
Please include a full list of publications and presentations (or Google Scholar link) when submitting your CV for this position. Additionally, to help us understand your past research, please include a short summary and how it connects to the mission of our Department.
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between$151,800and$210,000/year for California-based roles; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Note that TRI offers a generous benefits package (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave) and an annual cash bonus structure. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
